TRAINING FAQ

Is there a minimum number of times that we have to meet?

No, our program is built around whatever is convenient for you. Obviously, the more we can meet the more we can maximize results but we will work on developing a plan together to make sure that you continue your progress on your own as well. We have clients that we see multiple times a week and others that we see on a monthly basis. The programs are flexible and frequency of meeting may even vary week to week or month to month.

Are there contracts?

No! People have no obligation to return beyond their initial meeting. People return because they know we care about their well-being and that we deliver an exceptional service. We never want people to feel obligated to come or locked into a contract that isn’t appropriate for them. We recognize that life can have lots of variables and we can be flexible and adapt our programs to fit around all of those variables. There is no such thing as a contract at MET.

Do I have to do things that make me feel uncomfortable or I don’t like doing?

No…and yes. We never want you to feel uncomfortable and we will certainly have discussions together regarding this to ensure that this is an enjoyable experience for you. Your comfort level is extremely important to us and is one of our main reasons for opening MET. We want everyone to feel comfortable, never feel judged, and know this is a place they can come to feel great and alleviate stress. However, we will challenge you and will work together to push you to grow out of your comfort zone. This will be done in a fun, gradual way. We want to help you improve and overcome all challenges and obstacles and we will do this as a team!

I have a work schedule that varies every week. How can I schedule appointments?

No problem at all. We can work to accommodate your schedule to find a way to make it most convenient for you. We have some clients that meet at the same day and time every week and others that change days and times on a weekly basis.

I am very uncomfortable being in a gym; will I fit in?

Absolutely! Everyone is welcome at MET. We pride ourselves on having a positive, non-intimidating environment where no person ever feels judged or out of place. Our approach is that of being nurturing, positive, and working as a team to help you be successful. Being a private studio it will never feel like a packed gym that can be overwhelming with people everywhere. We will help you build up your confidence and achieve great success along the way. We love helping people and want to help you feel your best!

I am looking for a place for my child to get training. Can they come here?

Yes! Our clients currently range in age from 6 to 93 years old and we love the diverse nature of our client base. We can design a program for anyone regardless of age, limitations, prior experience, etc; we love helping people of all ages!

What does personal training entail?

It is a very individualized process. We typically start with an initial consultation where we will discuss your goals and the services that we offer. After the first meeting, we will schedule a full fitness assessment and health history to determine your current levels and set appropriate goals. From there it will vary depending on many factors. The duration of session and the frequency of meeting will be based on what is most appropriate for you. This will obviously impact program design and what we do together will vary depending on how often we are meeting and what you have access to in between sessions. Every program is totally customized and fit for you as an individual.

What happens during a consultation?

The consultation is a chance for us to sit down together and talk about your specific goals and how we can help you achieve them. This is a very exciting conversation for us because we will already begin visualizing your transformation and building our relationship together and that is what drives us! We want to help you! We will discuss things such as goals, time constraints, previous exercise history, limitations, and many other topics during the initial consultation. Communication is an important part of this process to help you be successful so we love the opportunity to discuss all issues together.

What happens during an assessment?

The fitness assessment will be our first meeting after the initial consultation. This is where we will establish baseline measurements on a series of measurable items. We will not do anything that you are not comfortable doing but typically we will measure weight, body fat percentage, take body measurements, perform a cardiovascular test, various strength tests, flexibility test, functional movements, etc. It is not a pass or fail test by any means. It is merely to determine our starting point and it is so satisfying for people to look back on their initial measurements and see how far they have progressed. It is also important to use these different measurements because sometimes people become too focused on the scale and lose track of all the other positive changes that have taken place as well.

I have never worked out before and I’m afraid of getting hurt.

That is totally understandable since this is something so new. All of our programs are designed to be appropriate for you as an individual. The progressions are based on how you are feeling and what is most appropriate to continue your progress. Communication is very important to us and your feedback helps us a lot with our program design. Everything will be performed in a safe, controlled manner and you will never do something that is inappropriate for you.

The only free time I have is before work or on my lunch break. Can I come in then?

Absolutely! The times for meeting and the duration of session are based around what is convenient for you. We have a locker room and shower facilities that you can use to get ready for work, as well.

I have a co-worker that is interested in working out with me. Can we do that?

Yes! Group training is a great way to have a built in workout team. The people in the group do not need to have the same goals or be at the same fitness level. This also brings the cost per session/per person lower.

My co-workers and I want to take a boot camp class when we get off work but can’t find a place. Can we do a class?

Yes! We can customize a class based on your schedule and interest. There needs to be a minimum of 3 participants and the cost is $10 per person.

What is the cost of personal training?

The cost varies depending on the program, duration of session, frequency of meeting, number of people in the group, etc. The programs are completely customized to fit what works best for you and all of your variables. A typical session costs $29. There are no contracts or minimum number of sessions that you must commit to. People can pay in advance or pay as they go.

How long is a personal training session?

We are flexible with the duration of the session to fit what works best for you. Some people meet for an hour, others 30, 45 or even 90 minutes. The duration of the session may vary from session to session. Many people will be at MET longer than their session to warm up, and then continue working out after they are done meeting with their trainer, as well.

Can I use the gym when I’m not meeting with my trainer?

You certainly can! Many of our clients will arrive early and stay after their session with their trainer to continue their workout. There are also limited membership options for clients only that allow them to use the facility at other times.

MASSAGE FAQ

This is my first massage, what should I expect?

This is YOUR session. Speak up! Why is this so important? If you want anything changed: pressure, areas worked, position or if you are too hot or too cold...speak up! You will not hurt the therapist's feelings by asking for something that will make you more comfortable. Your therapist wants this to be the best experience for you to relax and enjoy.
Also, what you requested in one session may be different in another. If you had a full body massage last time you had a session, but this time you only want your back/neck/shoulders/arms worked, it's perfectly fine to ask. You will enjoy your sessions so much more!

Do I have to be completely undressed?

You should undress to the level you are comfortable. For a full body massage, most get completely undressed. However, if you will be more comfortable during the session if you leave your underwear on, that's fine. The therapist will work around the clothes you left on as best they can. If removing all your clothes makes you too nervous and unable to relax, then you are not getting the optimal benefit from the session.

Your massage therapist will give you privacy to undress and get comfortable on the table.

Once you are undressed and on the table under the drape, the therapist will only uncover the part of your body being worked on. The genitals (women and men) and breasts (women) will not be uncovered. If the therapist is going to work on a woman's abdomen, a second towel or sheet will be used to cover the breasts so the main sheet or towel can be moved to expose the abdomen.

How do I prepare for my massage?

It's best for clients to not eat a large meal before their massage, to hydrate well, and avoid drinks like coffee. Also, use the restroom right before the start of the massage for maximum relaxation.

What do I do during a massage treatment?

Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, she/he will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.

Will the massage hurt?

This depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light, relaxing massage that doesn't probe very deep into the muscles, shouldn't hurt. With that being said, there is a 'feels good' hurt and an 'ouch, stop it' hurt. A good massage, even a really deep tissue massage, should always stay in the 'feels good' hurt range.

Pain can be an indication that the muscle is possibly injured or inflamed and pressure should be adjusted. Also, pain can cause you to tighten up and negate the relaxing effects of the massage. The most effective and deepest massage always works with your body's natural response, not against it.

How often should I get a massage?

"Some is better than none."

What does that mean? Well, it varies from person to person. If you are just looking for some occasional relaxation, then a session every 3-6 weeks may be fine for you. However, if you are looking to address a specific condition, then it is recommended to go more frequently at first and then slowly taper down to a maintenance schedule. Sometimes more frequent 30-minute sessions can be effective until your goals are met and a maintenance schedule is in place.

Frequency of sessions should be discussed with your massage therapist after your treatment when he/she has a better hands-on understanding of your particular muscular issues.

Can I talk during my session?

Sure, if you'd like to talk go right ahead. The important thing to remember is that this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying the experience. Many therapists discourage talking in hopes that you will relax, let your mind float free and enter a state of massage bliss.

In many instances, people may feel more relaxed starting off talking, and as the massage progresses, enter quiet states of relaxation. The important issue here is that there are times when you need to speak up. If the therapist is doing anything to make you uncomfortable, you should let her/him know immediately. Also, let him/her know if you get too warm or too cold, if the room is too bright, or if the pressure needs to be changed (lighter or deeper). If something is not working for you - speak up! It's OK!

How will I feel after my massage treatment?

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience a significant decrease or freedom from long-term aches and pains. Many feel a little slowed down for a short period and then notice an increase of energy, heightened awareness and increased productivity which can last for days. If you received a deep massage, you may be slightly sore the next day - much like a good workout at the gym. Sometimes a hot shower, or a soak in the tub can ease this soreness.

After your session you should increase your water intake a bit. Just a glass or two more than normal is usually fine. This helps keep your body's tissues hydrated and healthy.
